Jewelry Stores typically feature "stones." Precious stones.....birthstones....but Dave and Robin Grosenheider are appraising a "milestone" in their business. Fifty-five years ago, Walter and Frieda Hotopp purchased a jewelry store in Le Mars that still carries their name. The Grosenheiders are celebrating owning Hotopp Jewelry and Gifts for thirty-five years.
Dave was just twenty-one years old when the young couple purchased the thriving business which at that time was located on what they called "busy Plymouth Street." Rudy and Marge Adler had their sporting goods store next door and the legendary Club Café was just two doors down. Dave's parents, Bob and Violet Grosenheider, were operating Carmen's Dress Shop, just west of Hotopp's.
The Grosenheiders relocated their store in 1990 to its current location on Central Avenue . Although it was just a block and a half away, it was no easy task....especially the move of the large safe, estimated to weigh nearly 3,000 pounds.
Owner-Manager Robin Grosenheider credits personal customer service as the key to the store's success. Staff members Jane Grosenheider and Pam Brownmiller offer friendly, professional service and are responsible for the signature breathtaking window displays and merchandising inside the store. Most jewelry repairs are done right in the store. Kevin Small expertly performs the diamond setting, ring sizing, prong replacement, and many other intricate repairs from his workbench in the back of Hotopp's.
Robin added, "Our customers are dear friends. We know most of them on a first-name basis and we cherish the relationships and delight in sharing those special occasions with them. We've even sold wedding rings to the children of couples who picked out their engagement rings when we first took over the store.
Over the years, the Hotopp's inventory has expanded to include not just fine jewelry, watches, and clocks...but also a larger selection of gifts and home décor. The slogan for the long-time business, "more than just a jewelry store," is so true. The store now features an expanded baby department, wine accessories, wall art, flowers, and fashion jewelry.
